Commitment to Ghana

T & C is committed to the people of Ghana in these three different ways:

  • Economical
  • Environmental
  • Social

In addition, other sub-contractors like spare part dealers, food suppliers etc. will settle in the area, benefiting from the company and bringing additional employment.

01

Environmental

Compliance with governmental and ethical rules regarding the protection of natural resources. T & C intends to deliver a reforestation project in co-operation with Forestry Commission and local communities and aid organisations in an area of 100Km2 (100k hectares) in the long term.

Our farmer-partner programme would afford local farmers specific areas within our concessions for farming activities. We estimate that it would offer additional employment within areas of operation for about 20,000 farmers and their families. The company seeks to provide harvesting equipment including tractors and ploughs in support of planting and harvesting activities.

A co-operation with medium to large-scale fruit and/or vegetable suppliers will determine which of these plant and tree crops will be planted between the earmarked timber species.
This would be an additional business independent from or in co-operation with T & C.

This part is intended to be done in co-operation with the CSIR/ GTZ / CIM, who may provide experts to monitor the replanting of the trees as well as the farming procedures.

After a period of Three decades, T & C, would be in a position to harvest the demanded volume of logs out of its own estate on a revolving basis.

02

Socio-Economic

  • Apart from accommodation for employees, funds will be to social facilities including investments into local schools, hospitals, community centres, etc.

  • T & C trains apprentices in excess of its demanded staff for the maintenance and electrical department, with the aim of helping developing a knowledge base of skilled workers locally.

  • Product innovation, specifically, engineering wood with composite plastic. Plastics will be sourced from waste plastics.

  • The Research & Development (R & D) unit seeks to establish coordinated strategic local and international partnerships designed to exchange resources, skills and ideas with partners ranging from universities to startups and established corporates. Potential areas ripe for partnership include climate smart agriculture, forest preservation, species adaptation, composite materials and specialized multi-scale fabrication.

  • Additionally, from 2022, 2-4% of revenues will go towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and R & D each year.

  • CSR – For the over 39,400 inhabitants of Asamankese (West Akim District) within the next 10 years, funding would be allocated to the following:
    • Building a primary school
    • Building a clinic
    • Providing agricultural inputs for farmers as part of the Forestry commission’s Modified Taungya System
    • Building an IT resource centre
04

Climate Friendly - Environmental

We believe the yield from each tree could be improved.

As such, our Research department is seeking ways to better align with
the notion of a circular economy, by ensuring all aspects of the trees are fully utilized.
